Shia militias kidnapping, killing Sunni civilians in Iraq as revenge against IS

London, Oct 14: Shia militias armed by the Iraqi government have kidnapped and killed scores of Sunni civilians in the recent months as a revenge for attacks by Islamic State (IS) fighters, according to a report by campaign group Amnesty International.

Amnesty said that the Shia militias were operated with impunity, reported the BBC.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has accepted that the security forces were indulging in ‘excesses’ and vowed to govern for all Iraqis.

The accusations against Shia militias come two days after IS confirmed that it had captured and enslaved women and children from Yazidi minority.

Amnesty also said that the Shia militias were taking advantage of lawlessness in Iraw wherein the government bear take responsibility for arming and supporting them.
