Bengaluru: A low-intensity IED explosion injured two people, one of them – a woman – critically, on Church Street, a crowded commercial hub, in Bengaluru on Sunday night.
The woman, identified as Bhavani (32) from Tamil Nadu, sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to Mallya Hospital by her family members and passersby. The explosion occurred around 8.45 pm when Bhavani and other members of her family were walking towards Brigade Road. One of her relatives, who is yet to be identified, was also injured, but is out of danger, doctors at Mallya Hospital said.
The improvised explosive device had been placed between pots in front of Coconut Grove, a Kerala specialty restaurant.
Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi, who rushed to the spot, confirmed that an IED had been used in the blast which was packed with shrapnel.
“The city had received a general alert ahead of the New Year’s Eve. The city has been place on alert. We have summoned additional forces and KSRP platoons for additional security,” he said.
Dog and forensic squads rushed to the spot and conducted preliminary investigation.
“It was a crowded Sunday and many people were walking towards Brigade Road when the explosion occurred,” Mr Reddi said.
“I would like to inform the public that is an isolated incident. No one has been fatally injured,” he said.
The police blocked two ends of Church Street and conducted the investigation at the spot.
