Veteran India batsman Yuvraj Singh may yet find a place in the team’s World Cup squad. After being omitted from the 30-man probables list announced last month, the left-handed batsman’s name may come back into reckoning with Ravindra Jadeja nursing an injured shoulder.
Yuvraj’s omission surprised many former players and came as an outright shock to his fans. The left-handed batsman subsequently lost his place in Royal Challengers Bangalore side and was not offered a contract from Board of Control for Cricket in India. He, however, let his bat to the talking and slapped three centuries and a half-century in Ranji.
The knocks may be good enough to get his name back in the squad – the final list scheduled to be submitted by January 7. Jadeja injured his shoulder during the ongoing series against Australia. While he is currently recovering in Chennai, the time to regain full recovery is as yet unknown. An ESPNCricinfo report says the all-rounder will be fully fit by January.
As such, the BCCI does have the option of including Jadeja’s name in the final squad submitted. It can be replaced if the player isn’t fit in time – on medical grounds, giving a possible chance to Yuvraj to make a return.
BCCI selectors had said their provisional squad was named based on players who have performed.
While Yuvraj may have played his last ODI in April of 2014, he has been in splendid domestic form recently. In fact, he is leading the run-scorers’ list – a sign that the man-of-the-series in the last World Cup still has the firepower to stage an encore.
