A 32-year-old software engineer, Amit Bachchan, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in Capital’s Dwarka area after critically injuring his wife with a sharp-edged weapon.
The incident came to light on Sunday morning around 6:45 am when a PCR call was made by a security guard of the building after hearing Shivani’s screams for help.
The police arrived, after breaking through the balcony of the house. They found the man dead in his apartment in Platinum Heights, Sector 18-B, while his wife was found wounded in the bedroom. Amit Bachchan’s mother, Chandrakanta, was found locked in a third room.
According to the police, the wife of deceased Amit Bachchan, Shivani, who works as a travel consultant in Gurgaon, suffered severe head injuries.
“Amit and Shivani had got married two months ago, and neighbours told us that the couple had a strained relationship fraught with frequent quarrels,” Additional DCP (south-west) Chinmoy Biswal said. “Amit had hanged himself from the ceiling fan using a TV cable, which later broke and the body fell to the ground,” the officer added.
“Prima facie, it seems that Amit tried to kill his wife and then committed suicide. Shivani, who is out of danger now, has told us that she was sleeping when Amit attacked her,” said Biswal, adding that Amit had returned home late on Saturday after a party, following which an argument broke out between the couple.
However, the police are investigating the case from other angles as well.
