Sydney, Jan 8: India captain Virat Kohli today set a world record in Test cricket when he hit a century against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Test Scorecard; Day 3 Report Kohli has now become the first Test skipper in game’s history to score 3 centuries in first 3 innings. The 26-year-old right-hander from Delhi had scored twin tons in the opening Test of the series in Adelaide.
Today, he brought up his 4th three-figure mark (3rd consecutive as captain) of the series on the third day of the fourth and final Test. This was Kohli’s 10th Test hundred in 33rd match. He was 140 not out at close of play as India made 342/5 in reply to Australia’s 572/7 declared.
KL Rahul too hit a ton, his first in Tests, today. He is also the second Indian after Sunil Gavaskar to register 4 tons in a Test series. Gavaskar did it twice against West Indies.
Kohli, who was named captain for the Adelaide Test (1st of the series) after regular skipper MS Dhoni was ruled out due to injury, scored 115 and 141 in a losing cause. Dhoni returned to take over captaincy in the following two Tests – Brisbane and Melbourne.
However, he announced his retirement from the five-day game after the third Test in Melbourne. Now Kohli is full-time captain of the Test side and has continued his roaring form with the bat. He has reached where no other captain could in over 2,000 Tests since the first in 1877.
