THE LAUNCH OF INTEGRATIVE ONCOLOGY SERVICES AT MAZUMDAR SHAW CANCER CENTER

Bangalore, February 3rd , 2015: Narayana Health City Bangalore launched the department of ‘Integrative Oncology’ on the occasion of World Cancer Day – to provide holistic care for cancer treatment using scientifically proven complimentary therapy along with clinical treatment. A patient diagnosed with cancer undergoes physical, psychological, social and spiritual distress which impacts his/her quality of life. The department of Integrative Oncology has been launched to address distress and enhance personalized comprehensive treatment for cancer care.

Dr. Santosh Gowda – Head of Integrative Oncology at Narayana Health City along with a team of clinical experts and specialists from various domains form the Integrative Oncology team.

Cancer patients will be screened for distress and support from family, post which they will be recommended the appropriate personalized course of treatment. Besides the regular treatment to fight against cancer, the Integrative Oncology team will concentrate on aspects of mind-body medicine with the objective of overall health and well-being of patients and the immediate family members (care givers).

Talking about the launch of Integrative Oncology Services, Dr. Santosh Gowda – Head of Integrative Oncology at Narayana Health City said, “Cancer as a condition is life changing. It is imperative to involve a patient along with his/ her family members in devising the appropriate course of treatment. The Integrative Oncology team is like a patient’s extended family providing emotional support and guidance to the patient and his/her family. Mind-Body medicine helps the overall emotional well-being during cancer treatment by focusing on screening patients and caregivers for dysfunctional thoughts and beliefs, depression, anxiety, anticipatory grief and help with individual and family counseling, stress reduction strategies, pharmacotherapy for depression and anxiety, offer support groups for patients and caregivers.

The team comprising the Integrative Oncology department is handpicked as the experts will provide the backbone to patient support and care. Further, with the launch of this department it is reinstated that cancer care requires a humane touch.
