Warning over National Broadband Network scam

Consumers are being warned against giving personal information to people claiming to represent the National Broadband Network (NBN).

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a statement saying that as the NBN is rolled out, there’s also certain to be a spike in scammers making cold calls, sending emails or door-knocking.

It says scammers will provide false information seeking to trick consumers into giving out personal information or bank details.

“NBN Co does not provide retail services to consumers, so will not generally ask for banking details,” ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said on Friday.

Rather, consumers should contact their telecommunications provider if they have any questions about how to join the NBN.
