City resident Amarjit Singh Batth, 45, has won a photography contest organised by World Bank on the theme ‘gender equality’.

His click shows Sarabjit Kaur working on the valve of a water pump while in the background a male farmer works in his fields in Baddowal village of Hoshiarpur.

Batth who submitted his entry in January said that he never thought that this click would be adjudged the best among 48 entries from India. Also, he was the lone participant from Punjab in the contest. Talking to Ludhiana Newsline, he said, “There are various schemes which are run by World Bank for development in rural villages and under this contest we were told to submit entries for water supply and sanitation scheme.

I was casually clicking some photographs in Baddowal village when a woman came to operate a pump and a farmer was working in the background. I immediately clicked the moment and sent it for gender equality theme.â€

Mohammad Ishfaq, executive engineer, Punjab water supply and sanitation department said, “Under the scheme of World Bank, we have covered 6,000 villages in Punjab including 125 in Ludhiana where tubewells, water works connections and pipelines have been installed. “Batth has worked with us as a freelancer and inspired villagers to consume clean drinking water and maintain sanitation levels.

It is a proud moment for Ludhiana and Punjab water supply department,†he added.

The judges included World Bank team leader S R Poddipireddy and Onnu Ruhl, country head India. Batth submitted the photo with caption, “Managing manually manly.â€
