The United Nations human rights chief has said that Boko Haram militants are using children as human bombs in northern Nigeria and forcing women and girls into sexual slavery.

Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said that their office is receiving reports of the militant group using children as its first line of attack, as “expendable cannon fodder”.

Zeid said that Boko Haram is targeting towns and villages in northern Nigeria and Chad and Niger regions bordering neighbouring Cameroon, where bodies of children are strewn across battlefields.

Zeid said that the group has repeatedly used children as human bombs.

Thousands of people have been killed and 1.5 billion displaced as a result of attacks by Boko Haram during a six-year period.
