A 24-year-old boy who was declared brain-dead at AJ Hospital after suffering severe head injuries in a road accident, gave away gift of life to at least four people.
The donor, 24-year-old Jeevan Vijay Fernandes (24), from Belloor, Bantwal, suffered a road accident on Friday April 10 near Adyar and two days later, he was declared brain-dead at AJ Hospital.
Doctors said relatives and family of the patient voluntarily came forward to donate the organs.
Both the kidneys and liver of the brain dead youth were harvested.
Two doctors from AJ and two from Bengaluru, after harvesting the organs, on enquiries, decided that while the heart would be given to Narayana Hrudalaya, liver to BGS Global Hospital in Kengeri and other organs were taken to Bengaluru.
The Mangaluru police created green corridor to facilitate the ambulance transport the live organs to Mangaluru international airport and later it was taken to Bengaluru in a special flight.
Jeevan, son of Jerome and Gracy Fernandes, third among four children, was working as salesman at a automobile showroom. It was on April 10, when he was heading towards Mangaluru for a function, met with an accident and sustained severe head injuries.
