The addition of chemicals to make grains  look attractive  is rapidly spreading in city. After chemicals were found in fruits like apple and watermelon, now food grains such as moong dal, ground nuts, toor dal and greens such as coriander leaves, curry leaves are also being mixed with artificial colors to glow and attract customers.

In a meeting held at DC office on Wednesday, food and civil supplies deputy director K Rameshwarappa revealed this in connection with the adulteration of food items.

He warned the Mysore grains merchants association (MGMA) to counter adding colours to the food grains.

Responding to it, MGMA secretary Anand said that the awareness has been created among the merchants to prevent such grains from going to the market. However, the public are  attracted towards these attractive looking food grains, and this has motivated sellers to do it. He requested the district administration to conduct an awareness campaign among the public.

DC K Rameshwarappa said that some members of the public have complained about it orally,  but no case has been registered till date.”If we find such cases, we will be registering criminal cases against them. Already two criminal cases have been registered against the traders who had supplied adulterated Moong dal”, he said.

Speaking about the supply of rice in city, MGMA members assured that there will be no scarcity in the district. There was a communication gap between rice mill owners and merchants which has been solved at a meeting at Bengaluru, they said. The MGMA also said that they are not in a state to prevent middle men interference as the middle men play a vital role in the transactions.

Rice Mill owner’s representative of K R Nagar Shambulingappa, H D Kote representative Abdul Aleem and many others were present.
