Experts have warned that a colossal volcanic eruption may eradicate human civilization by 2100.
Scientists believe that there’s more than a one in ten chance of a devastating eruption on a scale that could seriously threaten the survival of mankind by the end of the century.
Humans are completely unprepared for the consequences of a giant eruption, according to a report which looked at the potential impact of “X-events” which could kill off a large proportion of the world’s population.
The Doomsday scenarios were detailed in a report by the European Science Foundation, which stated that massive volcanic eruptions have the potential to impact climate, anthropogenic infrastructure and resource supplies on a global scale.
The report said that under the present conditions of a global civilization facing food, water and energy scarcity, the largest eruptions 12,000 years ago would have had major global consequences.
The scientists called on world governments to spend 2 billion pounds each year on a network for monitoring volcanic activity.
