NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian PM Stephen Harper on Wednesday issued a joint statement, according to which both the countries have agreed to a uranium supply deal worth hundreds of millions of dollars that will see Canadian producer Cameco Corp. provide fuel for Indian reactors over the next five years. Supply of uranium will begin this year itself.
The agreement was announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s landmark visit to Canada on Wednesday – the first bilateral visit by any Indian Prime Minister in last 42 years.
Modi said the agreement worth $350-million reflects “a new level of mutual trust and confidence.”
“We in India felt Canada’s pain when this city was struck by a senseless act of terrorism”, PM Modi said, adding, “Canada has the potential to be a key partner in every area of India’s national development priority.”
Announcing that Canadians will be able to apply for tourist visas online before arriving in India, and will be eligible for 10-year visas, Modi said, “I look forward to our continued partnership in G20, ours is a natural partnership of shared values.”
Modi is spending the day in Ottawa and will travel to Toronto to address close to 10,000 members of Toronto’s Indo-Canadian community at Ricoh Coliseum tonight.
