New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum and coach Mike Hesson have been appointed officers of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for the teams unprecedented success in reaching the 2015 World Cup final.
The honours were announced even as McCullum was eyeing a series-levelling Test victory over England at Headingley.
Stuff.co.nz quoted McCullum, as saying it was obviously a tremendous honour for him and he was truly delighted to be able to accept it.
He described the honour as significant for cricket and hopefully significant for the team.
Pouring his emotions out, coach Hesson said he was taken by surprise, but added that one doesn’t achieve unless he has a pretty good bunch of people around him.
He said he would certainly recognise them before giving himself a pat on the back.
