A battalion of the elite Brigade of the Guards was raised at Bhusawal on Wednesday. The foundation of the unit was laid by Col SPS Chouhan, the first commanding officer (CO).
Lt Gen Ashok Singh, general officer commanding-in-chief of Southern Command, who is also “The Colonel” of the Brigade of the Guards was present along with Brig D V Singh, commandant of the Guards Regimental Centre. Other commanding officers of five such regiments from all over the county were also present.
The proceedings commenced with the hoisting of the battalion’s flag. This was followed by a special sainik sammelan in which Singh exhorted the soldiers of the newly raised battalion to put in their whole hearted efforts and live up to the glorious traditions of the Brigade of the Guards.
Army officials said the battalion joins the ranks of an exceptionally decorated and prestigious regiment. The first Brigade of the Guards was raised by Field Marshal KM Cariappa in 1949, amalgamating the finest traditions of Guards Regiments from across the world. The regiment is composed to mixed classes, something which reaches to the lowest ranks.
A press release from Southern Command stated, “The regiment has given us a sterling account of itself in all operations and in its possession has an enviable tally of gallantry awards and battle honours.
