English defender Laura Bassett, who scored an own goal in injury-time in her side’s semi-final clash with Japan, has said that she is heartbroken after crashing the team’s hope of winning the Women’s World Cup in Canada.
The Lionesses lost the match 1-2 against the defending champions.
Bassett said that she could not breathe, her heart was out her chest and she wanted the ground to open up and swallow her.
She insisted that she so was heartbroken and devastated that she has been unable to speak to her parents after the goal she scored.
However, England women’s football team coach Mark Sampson has heaped praise on his side, saying that they deserve to ‘go home as heroes’.
He added that the team has shown the world what it is capable of, adding that they would have special memories for the rest of their lifetime.
