Pakistan has provoked India yet again. In an audacious statement, Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has threatened that the neighbouring country won’t refrain from using nuclear weapons against India.
Accusing India of waging a proxy war against Pakistan, Asif alleged that there was evidence of the country’s support to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and Baloch separatists.
This is not the first time that such threat has emerged from across the border. Recently when the Indian Army conducted the Myanmar operation, former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf had said that the neighbour had not developed nuclear weapons to be used on Shab-e-Baraat.
But how serious are these threats from Pakistan? Where exactly do India and Pakistan stand against each other in the nuclear arms race?
According to the latest available information, while India has 90-110 nuclear warheads, Pakistan has a slight edge with at least 100-120 nuke warheads.
The onset of the nuclear race between the two countries dates back to 1974 when India first conducted a nuclear explosive device test, claiming that it was done for peaceful purpose. In no surprise, Pakistan ramped up work on its secret nuclear programme. Both the countries went for public demonstration of their nuclear capabilities with tit-for-tat nuclear tests in May 1998.
