Twitter has exploded with congratulatory messages for the England team, after they regained the Ashes series, claiming an emphatic innings and 78-run win over Australia on the third day of the fourth Test at a jubilant Trent Bridge.

Former Australian cricketer Shane Warne greeted England for their remarkable performance, tweeting, “Congratulations to Alastair Cook & the England team on the Ashes victory. Played fearless & entertaining cricket, was nice to watch!!”

“Huge congratulations to Andrew Strauss, Ali Cook and all of the England team on a stunning ashes victory. I’m a very proud Englishman today! ,” Former England cricketer Graeme Swann tweeted.

Reacting to their triumph over Australia, England all-rounder Ben Stokes wrote on Twitter, “Sorry for the miserable attempt at downing that beer…….but hey we’ve just won the #ASHES”

Meanwhile, Australian coach Darren Lehmann apologised Australian fans for their loss and also congratulated the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the team on winning the Ashes.

Earlier, the tourists were bundled out for a paltry 60 in their first innings as fast bowler Stuart Broad wreaked havoc on Australian batsmen to claim career-best figures of 8-15.

England then capitalised on Joe Root’s century (130) before declaring their first innings on 391-9 to give a commanding lead.

The win also marked a remarkable turnaround for England from the 5-0 hammering they endured in Australia 18 months ago.

England have now beaten Australia in four consecutive home series.
