21-year-old youth from Jalandhar kills self in Chennai, suicide note blames professors

According to the father of the deceased, a professor had humiliated him and forced him to repeat his semester as punishment.

A 21-year-old youth from Jalandhar, studying in a private engineering college in Tamil Nadu, was found hanging in his hostel room on Saturday. Police said Jagtaran Singh, a final-year marine engineering student of Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) University, Kanathur, Chennai, has left behind a suicide note, saying he was ending his life due to harassment from some professors. His body was cremated in Jalandhar on Sunday evening.

N J Singh, a bank officer, Jagtaran Singh had informed him that a professor had humiliated him and forced him to repeat his semester as punishment.

He also said that the authorities had also threatened to cancel the placement he had secured with an international shipping company.

He was supposed to undergo a test at the shipping company on Saturday, said the father.

I had tried to counsel him on phone that I would come there and set things right. But he was again insulted by the official and he took his life, he added.

Two students from the university, who accompanied the body, also said that Jagtaran was being harassed by a professor.

Thousands of students took out a candle light procession in Chennai to protest against the alleged harassment by the professor.

Some even hurled stones at the college building and gates.
