The Russian officials have burned 50 ducklings, which were smuggled in from Ukraine by a man who later sold them in Russia after avoiding border checkpoints between the two countries.
The man reportedly bought the ducklings from Kharkiv market in Ukraine’s second largest city.
Russian Government spokesperson Svetlana Zaporozhchenko said that there were no accompanying documents related to the animals so they decided to destroy them.
Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered officials to destroy food from western countries that have imposed sanctions against the country.
Zaporozhchenko confirmed the bizarre move, saying the destruction was complete and that the animals would be buried.
