Separatist leader Yasin Malik was arrested on Thursday by the Srinagar police ahead of the Separatist’s meeting with Pakistan NSA Sartaj Aziz.
Malik was taken to the Maisuma police station in Srinagar.
Other Kashmiri separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were put under house arrest.
The Hurriyat leaders had accepted Pakistan’s invitation and said they would meet Aziz to discuss their issues.
Defence experts say that Pakistan’s invitation to the separatists was a move to provoke India into cancelling the NSA-level talks but sources say that India has no intention of cancelling the talks.
Last July, India called off talks after Pakistan consulted Kashmiri separatists before a meeting of Foreign Secretaries.
