The Olympic swimmer and actor who popularised surfing in the U.S would have turned 125 on August 24
Hawaiian surfer and Olympic-medal winning swimmer Duke Kahanamoku, who would have celebrated his 12th birthday 5 on August 24, 2015, is being velebrated with a Google Doodle.
Duke was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, the first of nine children, and was a strong swimmer from an early age, breaking three freestyle world record in 1911.
He qualified for the American Olympic swimming team in 1912 and in the Stockholm Olympics that year he won the gold in the 100-metre freestyle and the silver in the 4×200 freestyle relay.
He later made surfing popular in the U.S, using his fame to as a swimmer to draw crowds.
Kahanamoku was also an actor, appearing in 14 films.
