Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday said the government has referred the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill to a select committee to consider the demands of the opposition.
“The Land Acquisition Bill, GST and the Negotiable Instruments Bills were passed in Lok Sabha, but we couldn’t move ahead in the Rajya Sabha, as we don’t have a majority there,” said Naidu.
“In this situation, we referred the Land Bill to a joint committee and the GST to a select committee, taking into the consideration the demands of the opposition,” he added.
The government is expected to convene a special session of parliament to pass the GST Bill, a constitutional amendment, but only after a consensus is arrived at among all political parties, including the Congress Party and the Left Front.
