Counting of votes for the Gujarat civic polls began amid tight security arrangements today at 9 am.
As per latest reports, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in 17 seats in Vadodara while Congress is leading in 30 seats in Surat.
Congress is ahead in Bhavnagar with leads on 20 seats while BJP is leading on 14 seats.
More than 1,800 candidates are in the fray for 570 seats across six municipal corporations of Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar.
Voting for six municipal corporations was held on November 26, while that for 31 district panchayats, 230 taluka panchayats and 56 municipalities was held on November 29.
The civic polls are important for BJP as the party is apparently facing anti-incumbency sentiments in rural and semi-urban areas of the state. The Patel agitation for quotas is also likely to affect BJPs performance in the current polls.
