Gina Myers, one of Reeva Steenkamp’s closest friends, believes that the recent ruling on convicted Paralympics runner Oscar Pistorius would bring much needed peace to the late model’s family.
Pistorius, a double-amputee athlete, was found guilty of murder after South Africa’s supreme court of appeals overturned his previous conviction for culpable homicide in the killing of his girlfriend Reeva on Thursday.
Reflecting on the murder verdict, Myers, with whom Reeva had been friends for six years prior to her death, said that nothing would bring her friend back but added that the verdict was a big day for South Africa and the world.
Earlier in October, Pistorius was released on parole and put under house arrest at his uncle’s house after serving almost a year in prison. He will now be handed a new sentence.
However, a senior judge of the South Africa supreme court of appeal overruled the previous conviction by dismissing the athlete’s claim that he pulled his gun on Steenkamp as an act of defence.
According to the South African law, the minimum sentence for murder is 15 years in prison.
