Chancellor Angela Merkel said that she wants a significant drop in the number of refugees coming to Germany, which is expected to be more than 340,000 this year.
Merkel has been fighting the pressure from her allies within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to put a cap on the number of refugees entering Germany.
“At the same time we took on board the concerns of the people, who are worried about the future, and this means we want to reduce, we want to drastically decrease the number of people coming to us,” Merkel said.
Merkel’s critics want her to ensure the number of refugees reduce before the elections in March, saying that her chances of running for a fourth term in 2017 would be in danger.
