Lack of Cancer awareness continues to be a concern area as far as the efforts with battling the disease are concerned in India. To spread out the awareness, India stand up to cancer campaign has been launched on the 12th of December 2015 and the logo was unveiled by Nirupa Bareja, Santosh Gowda and Tanveer Ahmed at the Press Club Bangalore.
#indiastanduptocancer is a campaign initiated by Mazumdar Shaw Medical Foundation. #indiastanduptocancer addresses the issue of illiteracy about cancer in India. The campaign spreads out the message “cancer is curable if detected early.†The approach of the people towards research and development needs to be changed.
“Helping people to battle cancer is not our only objective, facing and triumphing it is” says Dr Nirupa Bareja, Chief Program Director, Mazumdar Shaw Medical Foundation, Bengaluru.
“The biggest weapon in fighting cancer is awareness, accessibility, affordability and accountability. Only an integrated approach from policy makers, doctors and individuals will fox this present and future threat to mankindâ€, says Dr. Santosh Gowda, Head of Medical Oncology and Integrative Oncology, Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center. By initiating this movement, Mazumdar Shaw Medical Foundation likes to pass the message to the like minded people/Organizations and to join them under one roof in fighting against Cancer.
With rapidly increasing cancer rates across the globe, it is imperative that we actively pursue translational research (bench-to-bedside paradigm) to accelerate the development of novel treatment modalities to combat the disease. Ongoing research at Mazumdar Shaw Center for Translational Research (MSCTR) is geared towards developing innovative and cost-effective solutions in cancer diagnostics and treatment, adds Dr. Aditya, Chief Scientific Officer, MSCTR.
In a first of its kind of initiatives, Mazumdar Shaw Medical Foundation along with Starting Blocks a non-profit organization announced taking the campaign #indiastanduptocancer to Bengalurians . The effort will start with conducting a “RUN for Health†and highlight the social media campaign. The run is scheduled on 7th Feb 2016 at Ulsoor Lake.
Tanveer Ahmed, Co-Founder of Starting Blocks said,†#indiastanduptocancer is a message to spread. What better way than having nearly a 1000 runners from over 50 educational institutes and other organizations to take it forward. This is why the run will be significant way to highlight the rising detection of cancer especially at younger stagesâ€
The 7th Feb event will be coordinated and organized by The Classic Road Runners Club. Former Indian marathoner A Jayaraj will be the Race Director. The winners will be awarded medals, and the proceeds from the run will be donated to government owned Kidwai Institute of Oncology for treatment of juvenile cancer patients.
India has limited education about cancer and we are on the verge of unlocking the answers that will finally conquer cancer. By moving forward together, we have the potential to show: Cancer – It is not beyond us.
