The quality of imparting education must be given impetus to and never be compromised upon, said President Pranab Mukherjee. He was speaking at the sesquicentennial celebrations of Bishop Cotton’s Boys’ High School here on Wednesday.
“Education is not merely injecting information into a student’s mind. Education has to be imparted in a quality manner. If not, it will lead to problems for the student. The aim of education is to build character in a student, apart from instilling faith and confidence. The qualities of peaceful co-existence and rational thinking must also be inculcated in a student at an early age,†said Mukherjee.
Earlier, chief minister Siddaramaiah said the state government is going out of its way to ensure education in the state does not have any lacunae. “The government is committed to improving primary and secondary education in the state. In this regard, Rs16,404 crore has been set aside for the primary education. For secondary education, a sum of Rs3,896 crore has been allocated,†he said.
Siddaramaiah added that language must be a carrier, and not a barrier. “The state’s language must be respected. Our wish is to ensure that Kannada becomes the primary means of imparting education. Every school must impart quality education.
On the occasion, Mukherjee, Siddaramaiah, Governor Vajubhai Vala and others unveiled a stone marking 150 years of BCBS’ existence. Vala emphasised on the need to have a good character which he said will eventually help in building the nation. Bengaluru development minister K J George and others were present.

These words of praise, especially coming from the President, are even better. It feels very nice to come back to the school today after a long time,†he added.
