Former Australia opening batsman Justin Langer will step in for Darren Lehmann briefly as coach for next year’s one-day series against the West Indies in an attempt to prolong the latter’s career.
With Lehmann being encouraged to take an extended rest in June next year, Langer would get his first taste of international coaching during the Caribbean tri-series, which also features South Africa.
Lehmann, under whose tutelage Australia won their fifth World Cup title and home Ashes series, expressed that he would like to lift an Ashes crown in the UK after two failed attempts, in addition to a rare triumph in the subcontinent and defend the ICC’s pinnacle event’s 50-over title before the end of his tenure.
Lehmann will take his break after the World Twenty20 which concludes in early April and will be back with the national squad for the July tour of Sri Lanka.
