In the past three years, the country has seen tremendous interest and activity in the water and sanitation sector, propelling the issue of access to safe water and toilets to the highest levels. India’s planning commission budgeted US$ 26.5 billion to provide safe water to all urban and rural areas for the years 2012-2017, and the government’s Swachh Bharat Mission launched in 2014 has been operational for over a year.
