Former South African skipper Hashim Amla has lavished praise on Temba Bavuma, who became the first black batsman to score a Test century for the country, saying that it felt like a victory for his side.
The 32-year-old said he completely understand the pressure that the players of this colour face when they first come to the South African squad.
Amla said that he had a similar career to Bavuma and that everyone doubted his capability during the debut because of the colour of the skin.
Amla insisted that the team environment was in a very good space after Bavuma’s brilliant performance.
Bavuma, who is by far the shortest batsman in the line-up, standing 162cm tall, used mere 141 balls laced with 16 boundaries to reach the three-figure mark on the fourth day of the second Test against England.
Bavuma made an unbeaten 102 in the first innings during the fourth Test against England that ended in a draw.
South Africa are currently trailing 0-1 in the four-match series following their humiliating 241-run defeat in the opening Test against England in Durban. The two sides will now play the third Test in Johannesburg, starting from January 14.
