Last week, two young men sacrificed their lives when they stopped an ISIS suicide bomber from entering a mosque in Saudi Arabia. The suicide bomber blew himself up right then and the men lost their lives.

The friends were Mohammed Hassan Ali bin Isa and Abdul-Jalil al-Arbash, are now being hailed as heroes for turning the attacker away from the Imam Hussein mosque in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.

Eyewitnesses claim the man was disguised as a woman and tried to enter through a closed female entrance before going to the main gate, where the pair were manning a civilian checkpoint.

“Both friends chased the bomber away when he tried to enter the women’s section of the mosque in the south entrance and died when he detonated the explosives in the mosque car park. They saved a lot of lives by stopping the bomber from getting inside the mosque, They are both heroes.” said Mohammed Idris, an eyewitness.

Abdul-Jalil was reportedly 25 and had recently returned from studying at university in the US, getting married just days ago.

The Logical Indian salutes these bravehearts for saving so many lives and proving that those who save are bigger than those who kill.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi ratified the deal with his counterpart Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka.

Thousands of Bangladeshis inhabit more than 50 enclaves in India, while Indians live in around 100 areas within Bangladesh.

The countries will now swap territories and residents can choose where to live.

“We have resolved a question that has lingered since independence. Our two nations now have a settled boundary,” Mr Modi said at a press conference.

“We are not just neighbours, but nations bound by the threads of history, religion, culture, language and kinship – as well as a passion for cricket.”

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali described the agreement as “a historic milestone in the relationship between the two neighbouring countries”.

Mr Modi and Sheikh Hasina have also agreed to inaugurate a bus service that will link the Indian cities of Kolkata (Calcutta), Agartala, Guwahati and Shillong with Dhaka.

The agreement is significant because it is the first step by Bangladesh to allow road transit to India, a long-running Indian demand which it hopes will eventually enable it to have better access to its north-eastern states.

Parents and friends of students were photographed climbing school walls to pass on answers.

Many of those arrested were parents. At least 750 students have been expelled.

An estimated 1.4m students are taking their school leaving exams in Bihar alone – tests seen as crucial for their chances of a successful career.

The authorities have clearly been embarrassed by the cheating, the BBC’s Jill McGivering says, with the episode prompting ridicule on social media.

Students were seen copying answers from smuggled-in note sheets, and police posted outside test centres were even seen being bribed to look the other way.

On top of the arrests, in four centres further exams have been cancelled.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar condemned the cheating but said the images were not the “whole story” of his state.

He warned parents that helping their children cheat would only harm them in the long run.

State Education Minister PK Shahi said it would be difficult to conduct fair exams without help from parents, given the potential number of people involved.

“Three to four people helping a single student would mean that there is a total of six to seven million people helping students cheat,” he said.

“Is it the responsibility of the government alone to manage such a huge number of people and to conduct a 100% free and fair examination?”

Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the opposition of spreading lies on the land acquisition bill, Congress hit back and accused Modi of somersault on farmers’ issue.

Ahmed Patel, Political Secretary to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, said farmers are committing suicide and jawans are being killed by terrorists under his rule. Ridiculing the PM’s assurances to the farmers, Congress accused him of doing “somersault” on his promises after coming to power including on 50 per cent hike in Minimum Support Price.

An international team of scientists is to try to develop a wholly artificial vaccine to combat polio.

The disease is very close to being eradicated, with only a few hundred cases now reported worldwide each year.

The hope is that the new approach can address some shortcomings in an existing vaccine, and so help eliminate polio altogether.

The World Health Organization and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are providing a $674,000 (£438,000) grant.

The project was announced at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in San Jose, California.

Researchers in the US and the UK will participate. In Britain, this will pull in workers from Leeds, Oxford, Reading, and the Diamond synchrotron.

Genome ‘removed’

The battle against polio is tantalisingly close to being won.

Where once there were hundreds of thousands of cases worldwide, just 350 were reported last year, and most of those were in Pakistan.

But the last mile is proving to be frustrating. One reason is because the existing oral vaccine uses a weakened version of the virus as its stimulus to provoke a response and protection in the patient.

Jump media playerMedia player helpOut of media player. Press enter to return or tab to continue.

Prof Dave Stuart: “We’re not able at the moment to get rid of those last few cases”

And in just a few particular individuals, this can set up an infection in the gut that then enables a reactivated virus to pass out of the body and spread to other, unvaccinated people.

But if the virus particle has no genetic machinery this transmission route is closed, and the World Health Organization and the Gates Foundation is to fund the scientists to engineer just such particle for use as a replacement vaccine.

Professor Dave Stuart from Oxford University is a member of the team.

“The idea of the synthetic vaccine is that it contains no genome – it’s virus free,” he told BBC News.

“So it’s made, in a way, like a super-chemical, a complicated chemical, that assembles itself to look like the virus but has no way of ever replicating.”

The team feels it is already some way down the road to achieving its goal because of the success it had in developing a synthetic vaccine to combat the foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV).

Polio is from the same family of viruses and works in very similar ways.

Sri Lanka’s new President Maithripala Sirisena has discussed forging closer ties with India during landmark talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The two sides signed key agreements on trade and civil nuclear co-operation during Mr Sirisena’s first official foreign visit since taking office.

By visiting India he is making it clear that ties with Delhi are a priority.

This is in sharp contrast to his predecessor, who forged closer ties with India’s rival China.

During Mahinda Rajapaksa’s rule, China invested billions in loans and infrastructure projects in the island nation. Last year, a Chinese warship and two submarines visited Colombo port, much to the dislike of the Indian authorities.

Prime Minister Modi described Sri Lanka as India’s “closest neighbour and friend” following the talks.

The two leaders signed four agreements, including one on increasing trade as well as a landmark deal on civilian nuclear co-operation – the first that Sri Lanka has signed with any country.

Tamil issue

The two leaders also discussed Sri Lanka’s efforts to establish reconciliation with the ethnic Tamil minority.

Sri Lankan Tamils have complained that little has been done to restore trust and national unity after the war with Tamil rebels ended in 2009.

The issue resonates in India, which has its own sizeable Tamil population.

Before returning home on Wednesday, President Sirisena is due to travel to the Hindu temple in Tirupati, in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, and also the Buddhist pilgrimage site Bodh Gaya in Bihar.

The ceremony took place at an open ground, the Ramlila Maidan, in front of thousands of cheering supporters.

Mr Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 67 of 70 seats in the state assembly, trouncing both the mainstream parties.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which won a landslide in last year’s general election, was reduced to three seats.

It was a major setback for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Congress, historically the biggest party in Delhi, was wiped out.

“I knew the people of Delhi love me, but I didn’t know they love me so much,” Mr Kejriwal reportedly quipped at the ceremony.

‘Corruption-free Delhi’

During his inauguration speech, Mr Kejriwal said he would end the “VIP culture” that privileges politicians above ordinary citizens – for instance, allowing them to bypass the gridlocked city traffic.

“In developed countries, even PMs wait at bus stands. Why can’t the same happen here?” he said.

“We want to end the VIP culture in this country.”

He pledged to make Delhi “India’s first corruption-free state” in five years.

“If somebody asks for a bribe, don’t say no. Just take your mobile out of your pocket and record it on your phone,” he was quoted as saying by AFP news agency.

“You then come and give it to me. We will take the toughest action against the offenders.”

He has promised to end corruption and lower electricity and water bills.

Mr Kejriwal invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the ceremony but a spokesman for the chief minister-elect said Mr Modi had turned down the invitation.

Mr Kejriwal was sworn in as chief minister at the same place in 2013, although he resigned after 49 days after failing to pass an anti-corruption bill.

The AAP was born out of an anti-corruption movement that swept India three years ago.

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Patparganj, Manish Sisodia, has said that the Arvind Kejriwal government will be strict with the lawmakers and will take action against them if needed.

Sisodia is likely to be made Deputy Chief Minister in Kejriwal’s cabinet.

In an interview to Times of India, the AAP leader said that the party has a comfortable pool of MLAs and it will set standards for them to follow so that ‘unwanted’ differences can be avoided.

“Last year was a test for us. God wanted to see how we would deal with 28 MLAs. We do not foresee any problem… even if someone created issues, the party had in past no hesitation in taking action. This time, we have a comfortable pool of MLAs and we will set standards for them to follow,” he said.

Furthermore, Sisodia, while referring to people who quit other political parties to join the AAP, said that they were inspired by the anti-corruption movement.

“They know that there can’t be any trace of corruption in the party. They have also passed the test of character,” Sisodia said.

“It is not just them… the party will be strict with all other MLAs. We can finally afford to be strict,” Sisodia added.

When asked about the government’s immediate plans, he said, “The Budget will probably be delayed slightly. The party has a 70-point agenda and we have already started work on all the issues.”

On Wednesday, at a meeting with Delhi Chief Secretary DM Spolia, CM-designate Kejriwal asked him to prepare a roadmap for implementation of AAP’s 70-point manifesto which includes 50 per cent cut in power tariff, free Wi-Fi across the city and installation of 10-15 lakh CCTVs.

He said that the government will table the Jan Lokpal and Swaraj Bills in the second session of the Assembly.

The leader further said that the government will push for the CAG audit of power companies at the earliest.

Kejriwal’s AAP decimated the BJP and the Congress by recorded a landslide victory, securing 67 of the 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly elections. The BJP managed to bag only 3 seats.

The party had in December 2013 polls won 28 seats. With the outside support from the Congress, having 8 MLAs, it had formed government. However, the AAP government resigned in February after it failed to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill.

It should be noted that, senior AAP leader and top lawyer, Prashant Bhushan, had yesterday in a blog written that the biggest challenge for Delhi CM-designate Arvind Kejriwal will be to control the newly elected legislators that they don’t compromise with the principles of the party on several fronts.

He had feared that some people who were taken in the party from opponent parties are ‘completely immoral’. “Fighting elections is a business for them but I will not say anything further. I will raise these issues within the party.’

The AAP government will take oath on February 14 at Ramlila Maidan.
