Britain has launched its first airstrike against ISIS in Syria after MPs voted overwhelmingly to authorize military action.

According to The Guardian, RAF Tornado jets were seen taking off from the Akrotiri base in Cyprus and the Ministry of Defence later confirmed that they had carried out the “first offensive operation over Syria and have conducted strikes”.

The four RAF jets carry a range of munitions including Paveway IV guided bombs and precision-guided Brimstone missiles. Defence officials refused to be drawn on the targets of their mission.

A total of 66 Labour MPs rejected the advice of their leader, Jeremy Corbyn, and voted with the government, but only seven Tories ignored the party’s three-line whip and voted to oppose airstrikes.

NATO allies have decided to maintain troop levels in Afghanistan at around 12,000 next year and agreed to fund 3,50,000 Afghan troops.

the 28-member alliance had planned to slash troop levels by the end of 2015, but abandoned those plans over uncertainty about Afghanistan’s ability to fight Taliban militants who have taken over the northern city of Kunduz.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, said speaking at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, that allied forces’ main objective is to prevent Afghanistan from becoming “a safe haven for international terrorists.”

He said that it is also in our security interest to make sure that does not happen.

Excluding U.S. counter-terrorism forces, NATO will have about 12,000 troops in Afghanistan for most of next year, made up of about 7,000 U.S. forces and 5,000 from the rest of NATO and its partners such as non-NATO member Georgia.

Recognising that sustainable development, universal energy access and energy security are critical to the sheer prosperity and future of the planet, Union minister of state for coal, power and renewable energy Piyush Goyal said on Monday that clean and renewable energy needs to be made affordable for all.

“We do, hereby, declare our intention to support India’s proposal to launch an International Solar Alliance as a common platform for cooperation among solar resource rich countries lying fully or partially, between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn,” Goyal said at the launch of the International Solar Alliance at the COP21 climate summit.

The Union Minister asserted that India affirms its intention to join the international solar alliance as a founding member to ensure promotion of green, clean and sustainable energy and to draw on the beneficiaries of the sun in this endeavor, with a united vision of bringing clean, affordable and renewable energy within the reach of all.

“We share the collective ambition to undertake innovative and consulted efforts with a view to reduce the cost of finance and cost of technology for immediate deployment of competitive solar generation capacity in all our countries and to pave the way for future solar generation, storage and good technology adapted to our country’s individual needs,” Goyal added.

He also stressed on the fact that the alliance intends to make joint efforts through innovative policies, projects, programs, capacity building measures and financial instruments to globalise more than a 100 billion USD of investments that are needed by 2030 for the massive deployment of affordable energy.

“We recognize that the reduced cost of finance would enable us to undertake more ambitious solar energy programs to bring development and prosperity for our people. We intend working together towards the development of appropriate benchmarks, facilitating resource assessment, supporting research and development and demonstration facilities in a view to encourage innovative and affordable applications of solar energy,” Goyal said.

Highlighting the targets that India has set for itself in regard for a safer planet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a 35 per cent cut in emissions by 2030 while putting the onus on developed countries to mobilize 100 billion US dollars annually by 2020 for ‘mitigation and adaptation’.

“By 2030 we will reduce emissions by 35% of 2005 levels, & 40% of our installed capacity will be from non fossil fuels. We will achieve it by expanding renewable energy, for example by adding 175 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2022. We are reducing dependence on fossil fuels through levies & reduction in subsidies, switching sources where possible,” the Prime Minster said at the Climate Change Conference (COP21) Plenary.

Saying that over the next few days the fate of the planet will be decided, he called for genuine global partnership and added that India must grow rapidly to meet energy needs of everyone

“India must grow rapidly to meet the aspirations of 1.25 billion people of which 300 million are still without access to energy. The prosperous still have a strong carbon footprint but the world’s billions at the bottom of the development ladder are seeking space to grow. We will succeed if we have the wisdom to craft a collective partnership that balances responsibilities and capabilities,” the Prime Minister said.

Putting the onus on developed nations for taking the lead in the matter, he expressed hope that advanced nations will assume ambitious targets and pursue them as they have the most room for impact.

“The principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities must remain the bedrock of our collective enterprise. We look to the developed countries to mobilize 100 billion US Dollars annually by 2020 for mitigation and adaptation. We will succeed if we have the wisdom to craft a collective partnership that balances responsibilities and capabilities,” Prime Minister Modi said.
