A 30-year-old worker survived a freak accident at a construction site in Gurgaon on Thursday in which he barely managed to evade a six-feet-long falling iron rod that impaled his left hip.

The worker, identified as Rinku, was at the site on Gurgaon’s Sector 86 when he met with the accident. Rinku was passing iron rods to other labourers perched on the first floor when one of the rods accidentally slipped through a labourer’s hands.

The rod impaled his left hip even as the Uttar Pradesh native tried to move out of harm’s way.

“We will carry out the operation once the food inside the victim’s stomach is digested.

We have given antibiotics to the patient in the meanwhile. The extent of damage would be ascertained only after operation,” Dr Suresh Vashistha, a surgeon at the Samvit hospital, said.

Later, the worker underwent an operation. The worker is said to be in a stable condition.

Meanwhile, fellow labourers alleged that the construction company has not maintained adequate safety and security norms at the site.

“The security of labourers is not paid proper attention by the construction firm,” a worker claimed.

Gurgaon Police chief Alok Mittal said action would be taken if any negligence is found during the probe.
