Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), May 11: Police raided the office of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Varanasi on Sunday from where BJP’s prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi is contesting, leading to protest by party members.
The police confiscated campaign material from a vehicle, which was parked in an under construction building, and from the office.
An official, Layak Singh Atre, said appropriate action would be taken.
“We have recovered 272 T-shirts, 2000 coins marked with Modi’s face and 5000 pamphlets with monograms. We will take appropriate action,” he said.
The protesting BJP workers alleged that district administration was working at the behest of Uttar Pradesh Government, headed by the Samajwadi Party (SP).
“It is a conspiracy by the opposition. The administration is working at the behest of the SP government. Outsiders are doing this to malign us,” said BJP worker Gaurav Singh.
Earlier, the BJP had criticized the local administration in Varanasi after Modi was denied permission to hold a rally due to security reasons.
