Twelve people have been sentenced to varying prison terms by a Chinese court for injecting water into cattle before slaughtering to increase their weight and make more profit.

The fraudsters, who owned a beef shop, were accused of injecting water into more than 100 cattle via a pipe through the animals’ noses to fill their stomachs before they were slaughtered.

They were sentenced to between six months and two years for manufacturing and selling fake goods between March 2014 and May 2014, Rui’an People’s Court in east China’s Zhejiang Province said.
