United Nations confirms ISIS destroyed ancient temple of Bel in the Syrian city of Palmyra

The United Nations has said that the satellite images show that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has destroyed the ancient temple of Bel in the Syrian city of Palmyra.

ISIS militants are believed to have targeted the temple of Bel on Sunday with a powerful blast.

However, the extent of the damage is at the Roman-era structure was not immediately clear.

The UN training and research agency said that they could confirm destruction of the main building of the Temple of Bel along with rows of columns in its immediate vicinity.

It was the second ancient temple that ISIS militants attacked this month after the ancient Baal Shamin temple.
