In an increasingly technology-driven 21st century, can tools of a bygone era still be of use? It seems so, at least in the case of young, still innocent and impressionable, and inquisitive kids yet to be exposed to the rigours of making a living.

The time tested objectives of inculcating a spirit of healthy competition, confidence, improving concentration, intelligence, speed and accuracy and acquiring self-development skills is still par for the course today as in the past, and keeping this in mind, about 3000 children from 400 schools spread across 20 Indian states, and about 6000 parents, will take part in the day-long SIP Prodigy Competition-2015 this coming Sunday (November 22).

The event will be held at the Expo Centre in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and is organised by the Chennai-headquartered SIP Academy India (P) Ltd., which is the Indian arm of the Malaysia-based education group SIP Academy SDN-BHD.

Believing that each child is unique and has the potential to be a winner, and has the desire to achieve excellence in academics or in any other walk of life, SIP India has trained each of these 3000 kids to enable them to showcase their mental arithmetic prowess at the 12th National SIP Prodigy Competition-2015.

The students will be tested on their concentration, confidence, intelligence, speed and accuracy.

“The objective of the competition is to develop a competitive spirit amongst these children and motivate them to excel in life,” says Dinesh-Victor M.D. SIP India Academy Pvt. Ltd.

In this Sunday’s exciting competition, each child will take part in a series of number-crunching mathematical games where they will add, subtract, multiply and divide to solve more than 120 sums in just five minutes using the abacus instrument and also solve 120 sums in 3 minutes visually (without using abacus by mental arithmetic calculation).

The abacus is a palm-sized wooden frame with five sliding rows, a calculating tool that has been in use centuries much before the adoption of the written modern numeral system. It is still widely used by merchants, traders and clerks across the globe.

Held every year, the National SIP Prodigy Competition has already featured four times in the Limca Book of National Records i.e. in 2005, 2007, 2010, and 2011. It has also won the Worldwide Achievers Award at the Asia Education Summit and been declared the Best Coaching Institute for Skill Development for Children in India.

The SIP Abacus programme uses three tools to impact children – Abacus, Brain Gym and Speed Writing. The programme helps children to enjoy numbers, develop their mental skills of concentration, visual memory, listening and builds their self- confidence. It also incorporates a lot of fun through games and puzzles.

With the fear of math out of their way, children surprisingly begin to enjoy doing numbers. The Brain Gym Exercises help children to relax and energise their brains to do new tasks. It has been seen that after taking part in this competition, children improve their ability to learn, do their school work faster and have more free time to pursue their respective passions.

The SIP Abacus programme is a skill development programme for children in the age group of 7 to 12 years and parents with disposable incomes. It focuses on improving essential learning skills.

Founded in 1997 by Malaysian entrepreneur Mr. Kelvin Tham, the SIP Abacus programme is an international programme currently available in 12 countries. So far, it has benefited over 500,000 children across 900 learning centres.

In India, this program was first initiated in August 2003, and as of March 2015, over 325,000 children have benefitted from this programme across 20 states (Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Nagaland, Orissa, Pondicherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal).

The SIP has a strong network in India in 20 states (275 + cities and 625 + learning centres). At least 250 schools in the country are availing its various programmes.

In India, every year, regional level contests happen in all states followed by the National competition. Till now, 98 competitions have been held over the last 12 years and the aim is to meet the challenging demands of today’s young generation.
