New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum is unlikely to play the third one-day international against Sri Lanka, says coach Mike Hesson on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old swashbuckling opener, who will retire from international cricket in February, is recovery from a back injury sustained during the second match while trying to field a ball on the boundary in Christchurch.

Hesson confirmed that McCullum was ‘still pretty sore’, and said that it was unlikely the captain would play but refused to rule out his chances completely.

New Zealand are leading the five-match series 2-0 after comprehensively defeating the tourists in the first two matches.

Kane Williamson is expected to lead the side if McCullum is unavailable.
