Following Pyongyang’s announcement of a successful hydrogen bomb test, the United States has called on China to sever ties with its ally North Korea.

US secretary of state John Kerry said that he had conveyed to Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi in a phone call that Beijing’s approach towards North Korea had failed.

“China had a particular approach that it wanted to make, that we agreed and respected to give them space to implement that. Today in my conversation with the Chinese I made it very clear that has not worked and we cannot continue business as usual,” Kerry told reporters.

The nuclear test carried out by North Korea on Wednesday drew angry reactions from the US and China, who had not been given prior notice about the test.
