New Delhi, Jan.17: Sunanda Pushkar, wife of Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development (HRD) Shashi Tharoor was found dead in her hotel room on Friday night.

Her body was found in Room number 345 of the Leela Hotel in the capital, and the Delhi Police Commissioner has ordered an inquiry into this matter.

Shashi Tharoor’s personal secretary Abhinav Kumar confirmed her death, and said that the cause of death can be ascertained only after the post mortem report.

“Sunanda Tharoor was found dead in her hotel room lying in her bed. The police and the forensic team and the magistrate are on the spot completing the formalities. The cause of death as yet is unknown,” he told media here today.

Kumar further disclosed that there was no obvious sign of any foul play or any struggle, and added that the police have sealed the room.

He also revealed the sequence of events that happened before her body was found.

Kumar said that Shashi Tharoor had reached his suite at around 8:30 pm, and upon finding the bedroom door closed assumed that his wife was sleeping. It was only after few minutes that the minister, who was accompanied by his PA, went inside the bedroom and found her dead.

Kumar also disclosed that Tharoor and Sunanda had taken up a room in the hotel yesterday morning.

“She was unwell, and there was painting work going on in her house, therefore she took up a room here. Both Sunanda and the Minister were staying in the hotel since yesterday,’ he added.

Her death comes a day after the Twitter scandal allegedly involving her, husband Shashi Tharoor and a Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar.

Sunanda Pushkar had accused Tarar of stalking her husband and trying to ‘break’ her marriage.

Tarar in her twitter page wrote: “I just woke up and read this. I’m absolutely shocked. This is too awful for words. So tragic I don’t know what to say. Rest in peace, Sunanda.”

Earlier on Thursday, Tharoor had come out with a joint statement with Sunanda Pushkar stating that they were “happily married”, but distressed by “some unauthorised tweets”.

“We wish to stress that we are happily married and intend to remain that way. Sunanda has been ill and hospitalised this week and is seeking rest. We would be grateful if the media respects our privacy,” Tharoor had said in a statement.
