New Delhi, Jan. 30: Sikh groups protested against Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, on Thursday, after he denied his party’s role in 1984 Sikh riots.
Protesters holding black flags and placards shouted anti-Rahul Gandhi slogans outside his residence and scuffled with police and broke down barricades.
“We want to ask Rahul Gandhi names of the people who were involved in Sikh riots and what action have you taken? The entire country for the past 30 years knows that Congress party was involved in the riots and now he should reveal names of the accused,” said president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), Manjit Singh G.K.
In an interview to a television channel on Monday, Rahul Gandhi also said that the Congress government tried to stop 1984 Sikh riots. He offered no apology for the anti-Sikh violence, saying he wasn’t part of the riots back then, but the government did work to stop the riots.
The violence, which claimed the lives of almost 3, 000 Sikhs, was triggered after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984 by two of her Sikh bodyguards.
