Suggests statue of Kempe Gowda at international airport

Bangalore: Bangalore South MP & BJP National General Secretary Ananth Kumar on Sunday said Kannada should become a way of life rather than a mere language for day-to-day communication.

“Our language is so rich in several ways. Unfortunately, Kannada has become diluted with people preferring to mix English words in spoken language. Unfortunately, there are very few people, who can speak chaste Kannada. This is a disappointing development. We need to nurture the language and promote it,” Ananth Kumar said addressing the “RashtraKavi Kuvempu Vicharadhare” convention organised by the Vishwa Manava Samsthe here.

He pointed out that he was greatly impressed by Jnanapith laureate and renowned Kannnada writer Kuvempu and his literary works. “Every day, I gain inspiration from Kuvempu’s compositions. His message on universal brotherhood is relevant even till date and we need to inculcate that in our daily routine. Undoubtedly, Kuvempu is the greatest cultural and literary ambassador of Karnataka,” he added.

Ananth Kumar said he used every opportunity to promote Kannada be it in India or abroad. “On all the five occasions, I was elected to the Parliament I have taken the oath in Kannada. Last time I made sure that 26 out of the 28 MPs from Karnataka took the oath in Kannada. I was greatly inspired by Kuvempu and that prompted me to address the UN General Assembly in Kannada two years ago,” he said.

Lauding the decision to name the Bangalore International Airport after Kempe Gowda, the founder of the city, Ananth Kumar said special efforts were required to make it a reality. “We should not stop here. We should not honour Kempe Gowda by merely dedicating the airport to him. We have to spread information about his contribution to the city by distributing free booklets to the 11.6 million passengers, who travel in and out of Bangalore from the airport. We also need to have a statue of Kempe Gowda at the airport as a mark of respect,” he stated.

Ananth Kumar said he would intervene in the two matters to ensure that the renaming the airport as Kempe Gowda International airport is completely justified.

Justice A J Sadashiv, retired judge of High Court of Karnataka, Bangalore City Mayor B S Sathyanarayana, MLA Ravisubrahmanya, Former minister V Somanna, Corporator Lakshminarayana, Vokkaligara Sangha Director Kale Gowda, Kannada activist A Mariyappa, Hanumanthanagar Credit Cooperative Society President Balgangadhar and Srinagara Credit Cooperative Society President Gangahanume Gowda were present on the occasion.
