Fitness history will be in the making here in the city with the Skyscraper Dash on June 15th 2014. On this day, the Brigade World Trade Centre (WTC) will play host to a fitness event unlike anything the city or the country has ever seen!

The Skyscraper Dash will see participants run around the Brigade Campus, Sheraton as well as the Orion Mall, a distance of 2.5km. The run will end with a dash up 850 stairs (31 floors) all the way to the roof of the building where the finish line will be placed at the High Ultra Lounge.

What’s in store for participants?

Event organiser Ajay Gupta, Founder of Sport365 says, “‘The Skyscraper Dash’ is a uniquely challenging event for the running community of Bangalore. Most runners will be able to complete the run but it will be challenging. We are considering all eventualities and have a participant safety plan in place with trained paramedics and several egress points in case runners have trouble completing the climb.”

All participants will be issued timing certificates, with prizes being awarded to the top male and female participants who reach the finish line.

“High Ultra Lounge will be offering runners the option of a wholesome breakfast at the end of the run. The breakfast will include South Indian and continental food with fresh fruits, juices, cereals and an vast array of South Indian favourites to provide the runners with much required carbs and protein post the event” says Pravesh Pandey, Director-Operations, High Ultra Lounge

The Everest challenge!

‘The Everest Challenge’ is an event within the Skyscraper Dash which will have immense appeal to marathon runners of the city. Participants will have to run up the 850 steps a total of 70 times to equal the height of Mount Everest (8,848 mts). This may be made more interesting by getting together 10 friends and splitting the run up between all of them to earn the necessary rankings to complete the race.

Why stair running?

Stair running today is an internationally recognized sport and The Skyscraper Dash at Brigade World Trade Centre is accredited by The World Tower Running Association and will count towards their World Cup rankings.

Dr Bose Nair, Vice President of World Trade Center says “The WTC is a gravity defying structure in itself. It is but natural that it play host to The Skyscraper Dash.”

According to Dr. Naga Nischal of Columbia Asia Referral Hospital – Yeshwanthpur, “Stair running is considered an effective cardio work-out. Stair climbing burns up to twice as much calories as running on flat surface and 3-4 times as much calories as walking. Taking the stairs instead of an elevator is one of the easiest ways to incorporate exercise in your daily schedule. This sort of activity increases the heart rate and improves blood flow thereby energising the body and helps reduce cholesterol in the long run. So remember – avoid the elevator and run up the stairs to keep yourself healthy and have a good start to the day.”
