Woman harassed in a bus; ASI held

Mangalore: An Assistant Sub-Inspector attached to the Shankaranarayana police station of Udupi district was arrested after a woman complained that he had touch her private parts in a moving bus.

Udupi Superintendent of Police Dr Boralingaiah M B confirmed that ASI Devaraj was arrested after he was booked under section 354 ( assault or criminal force with intent to outrage her modesty), based on a woman’s complaint. He has been remanded in judicial custody and was suspended immediately.

According to police sources, on Tuesday, Devaraj was traveling in a crowded bus to Gangolli from Kundapur. On the way, a woman carrying a baby boarded the bus at Trasi and stood near him. The police said Devarak probably observed that the woman was finding it difficult to stand in a moving bus with a child, and took the opportunity to allegedly touch her private parts. The woman shouted at him and allegedly slapped him in anger. There was a heated argument with the ASI, after the locals joined in.

A complaint was registered at the Gangolli police station, where the ASI worked previously. He joined the police force in 1990 as a constable and served as a head constable before being promoted as an ASI.
