Coimabatore (Tamil Nadu), Aug. 15: To celebrate Independence Day, local institutions have come together to display the National Flag which spans 3.5 kilometres in length.

Basheer Ahmed, one of the organizers of the event, told ANI, “We want to create unity in our community, which is why we have displayed this flag. We want to spread the message of peace and harmony and we felt that this method will be infectious. It will certainly also be popular in other cities and indeed, the entire country.”

John Peter, another organizer said, “The response has been overwhelming. Cutting across religion and caste, everybody has participated in shouting slogans of ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Bharat Mata ji jai’.” He also added that almost 3500 people have participated in the event.

This celebration comes after more than 1400 school children participated in the Independence Day celebrations by dressing as Jawaharlal Nehru.
