Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Goa Shantaram Naik has said that any attempts by the BJP government to safronise new education policy which is being drafted with inputs from educationist Dinanath Batra, should be opposed tooth and nail by the secular minded people of the country.
Speaking on the occasion of Rajiv Gandhi birth anniversary function at the Congress House here on Wednesday, he said that there is no doubt that the Education Policy of 1986, modified in 1992, requires to be changed to give scope and recognition to the new technology but in the name of modifying education policy, country should not be taken to the bullock-cart age.
Recalling the reply given to him to an unstarred question by Ms. Smriti Irani, Union Minister for Human Resource Development during the just concluded monsoon session about plans to change the education policy, Mr. Naik demanded that new education policy should ban organisations which spread superstitious beliefs among children and adults alike.
He also pleaded for a ban on candidates who promote such beliefs from contesting elections of Parliament, State Assembly or local bodies.
He further demanded that the Central and State governments should stop funding organisations which spread and promote these beliefs.
